Log cabin ceilings aren’t just ceilings anymore; they’re objects of beauty, fascination, and functionality. We find many options in all styles and sizes of log cabins, including:
- Paneling and Drywall
- Vaulted and Cathedral
- Exposed Beams and Rafters
- Peeled Log Trusses
- Combinations of These
Ceilings come in a wide range of colors, architectural styles, and serve other purposes like hanging lighting, decorations, antiques, antlers, personal items, and more. They can be high or low, lightened up with skylights, or provide cool air with ceiling fans. The following ideas will provide some options for your ideal cabin ceilings.
Paneled Ceilings Are the #1 Choice Followed by Drywall
Wood ceilings made with pine or cedar paneling give your cabin that traditional look. Being in their presence provides a warm and cozy feeling that is relaxing. Using all wood gives a consistent theme in the rooms throughout the cabin. You can vary them with different colors of stain, furnishings, and décor.
Favorite ceiling colors include natural, light, medium, and two-tone hues with darker color accents where desired. Tongue and groove/end-matched paneling is installed with a nail gun and is much easier to handle than large sheets of drywall.
Not all log cabins use wood ceilings and drywall is a good option. It gives a home more of a contemporary atmosphere, and you can paint them any color desired. Options range from plain shades of white to dramatic darker or bolder colors.
Vaulted and Cathedral Ceilings Add a Touch of Grandeur
Vaulted and cathedral ceilings add height to one and two-level log cabins as well as a touch of grandeur. Contractors use these two terms to describe ceilings that are not flat like conventional ones. Both add more open space in the common area or living room and need more air circulation to spread the heat around in the winter. Both also look fantastic with pine or cedar tongue and groove paneling.
Vaulted ceilings typically have a single sloped side, a curved or arched slope, or unevenly sloped sides. Many of them are framed by prefabricated trusses for beauty and strength. A cathedral ceiling is symmetrical with two sloping sides that meet at a ridge in the middle of a room. The slope is most often the same as the slope as the cabin roof. Prefabricated roof trusses make it much easier, faster, and safer to install them

Exposed Beams and Rafters Are Rustic
Two other popular options are adding exposed beams and rafters to create a more rustic atmosphere. These wood elements are available in several sizes that demand attention and can make a striking statement in your log cabin. They can also add a timeless and dramatic sense of strength and structure to any room. Beams come in the forms of:
- Structural
- Decorative
- Beam Covers
Exposed rafters may be 2x4s or 2x6s for supporting the roof. They are spaced to provide maximum strength and can be stained the same color as the wood ceilings. They are also rustic like exposed beams and look natural in any cabin. All ceiling plans must be finalized before construction starts to prevent ‘changing in midstream.’
Log Trusses Add an Architectural Flair
Log trusses add both an architectural flair and structural integrity to ceilings and roofs and are our last ceiling option for discussion. They typically come in 20’-30’ lengths and from 4”-12” in diameter. You can choose either smooth or peeled logs for the effect you desire.
Round log trusses can be custom-made for your size cabin, home, or business building. They have both interior and exterior applications and can be stained any color of your choice.
