Knotty pine paneling is wall paneling made from pine boards that have visible knots—the darker, circular marks where tree branches grew. Knotty pine typically has a warm yellow, honey, or reddish-brown color with prominent knots and wood grain. The highest quality is individual tongue-and-groove boards with the end-matched design.
Knotty pine and regular pine are similar but not the same. The main distinction is appearance, not necessarily the type of wood. “Knotty” pine intentionally retains visible knots, giving it a rustic character, while “clear pine” is selected for fewer knots or no knots and a cleaner, more uniform appearance.
Today’s Knotty Pine Paneling
High-quality knotty pine paneling is tongue and groove and end-matched for zero-waste. Each piece is kiln-dried, hand-selected, and inspected for the highest quality. There’s no need to butt end-matched paneling or siding on a stud like you would the “Old Way” with 12, 14, and 16-foot ordinary pine boards. The best paneling significantly reduces measuring and cutting time for each job. The results are 15-20% labor savings and up to 20% less material waste.
The best results are obtained by using ¾” thick paneling boards for strength and durability. You can choose from these widths: 4”, 5”, 6”, and 8” in an unfinished condition. Knotty cedar is made in 6” widths, and you must check with the supplier to see if it is currently available. Today’s knotty pine paneling is a versatile product.

Favorite Layout Patterns
You can lay out knotty pine paneling on the walls in a variety of patterns to meet your home style and décor. Installing paneling horizontally is a popular way to secure it to walls. Vertically arranging the boards is a traditional style. Running it at a 45-degree angle is an interesting way to lay it out.
The herringbone pattern takes longer but can be gorgeous. Using the bottom half or third of a wall as wainscoting is eye-catching. Paneling can be installed in a chevron fashion that adds a different touch. Using a combination of these layouts or your own creative design can also be very appealing.
Complementary Trims And Moldings
Paneling needs trims and moldings at the top and bottom of the walls. Pinewood products coordinate well with knotty pine paneling and can be purchased in unfinished and pre-finished conditions. These are favorite styles:
Around doors and windows: Colonial, Three Bead, Round-Over
For baseboards: Colonial, Three Bead, Round-Over
For tops of walls: Triple Bead, Beveled Edge, Crown Molding
For corners: Inside, Outside
Misc. applications: Quarter Round, Cove, Base Shoe
