Whether you own a suburban home, the quintessential cabin by the lake, or a modular home, you need to make sure that you’re ready for what could be the biggest change in the history of your domicile. We’re going to go over a few things that you must do to prepare – it might sound like a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it.

Getting Ready for your Wood Paneling Installation

So what steps do you need to take before you start your installation? You’ve probably been racking your brain up to this point, but don’t worry, the steps are pretty easy to follow.

Take Down your Current Paneling

Unless you’re building a brand new home, you may already have a wall covering like drywall or some old school 4×8 sheets of paneling. Make a determination whether tearing off the existing material or installing new knotty pine paneling over it is the better idea. In most cases, removing the old material is the best option. If in the process of removal you find that you cannot do it in a neat, clean cut manner, then it might be within your best interest to start by turning off the electricity to your home, or at least to the sections where you are going to be performing the demolition. You can do this from the breaker box, though it might be prudent to leave power on to at least one section so that you can use work lights and other tools. Once you are sure that it is safe, you can proceed to knock down the paneling and prepare for something entirely new.

Smooth it Out

Log Railing & StairsOnce you remove the paneling, the next step will be to walk through your house and examine the studs – they need to be perfectly smooth to effectively install the wood paneling. Survey your home, and first, make sure there are no nails jutting out from the studs. If there are, then you have to choices: you can either knock them into the wood with a hammer, or you can pull them out.

Take Measurements

If you have not done so already, it would be a good idea to take measurements and ensure that you are purchasing the right size paneling pieces for your home – ideally, you would have already done this, but it’s a good idea to cover all of your bases. The installation is very easy once you are properly prepared – our interlocking tongue and groove system makes this much easier than any other type of paneling installation that is out there!
